Etymology

This, at least in its earliest forms, may be ME  crecche , cracche <OFr. cresche , 'manger, crib,' but used also of a small cot (NED s.v. cratch ), though, unless the form is borrowed direct from France, one would have expected Crecche rather than Cressche .The source of the suffix in the later forms is not clear. The Dictionnaire Topographique gives names La Crèche (L'Aube, Pas de Calais) and Les Cresches (L'Eure).
