Etymology

OE  Cettan-dun , 'Cetta's hill.' For the name Cett (a ) cf. Chettisham (C) and Cettan treo (TCS 210). This name may be a variant pet-form of Cedda , with unvoicing of the medial consonant as suggested by Zachrisson, Two instances of Fr .influence on English PN 10, n. 2. The later hesitation between t and d is probably an example of French spelling influence, ultimately affecting pronunciation, as noted by Zachrisson in the same paper pp. 8, 9.
