Etymology

Professors Ekwall and Zachrisson agree in suggesting that we have here a folk-name in -ingas , derived from OE  hliþ , 'hill, slope.' OE  Hliðinga -beorg (Hleoðunga -beorg ) would account for the ME forms. For such a name cf. the p.n. Lythyngeshull found in Kimble in the 13th cent. (AD ii). Hence, 'hill of the slope-dwellers.' v. Introd. xii. n. i.
