Honeyburge

Early-attested site in the Parish of Boarstall

Historical Forms

  • Honybrugge 1298 VCHii.132
  • Honey Bridge 1826 B

Etymology

This bridge spans Danes Brook but there is mention in OE  charters of more than one stream called hunig-burna , hunigbroc (v. PNWo 86) and this stream was doubtless alternatively a 'honey-brook' and the bridge 'Honey-brook-bridge.' For the loss of the middle term cf. Saunderton Lee infra . For-burge , v. Introd. xxiv.
