Etymology

'Briddel's thornbush' v. þorn . The name Briddel is not on record in OE but is a regular diminutive formation from the well-established Bridd (Redin 18). Cf. Birdsall (Y), Burcott (O).The l is lost from the consonant-group dlsth , sth > st , and metathesis of the r has taken place. The first form is clearly a blunder. Apparently the form for Brigstock (Nth) has got into the Bucks return.
