Etymology

Probably Acan-leah , 'Aca's clearing,' v. leah . The name Āca may be inferred from Acantun (BCS 1289) = Acton (Sf) and from Occleston (Ch), DBAculuestune . The early forms are inconsistent with derivation from āc -leah , which would have become Ackley or Oakley in modern times. It is clear however that some of the forms have not been uninfluenced by the ready association with that more common type of name, which is found in the not very distant Oakley infra .
