Etymology

Probably 'valley of the people of Gēat', v. -inga-, denu , and cf. Eaton Sr 88. Geatingas could mean 'the dwellers by the gate', but no feature of the topography supports this. Alternatively, the pers.n. could be Ēata , with the development of prosthetic [j]. The village is on a plateau, and it can only be suggested that denu refers to the valley which rises from the R. Pang to this higher ground, immediately west of the village.
