Etymology

Woodcray Manor Fm, Wodetri 1176 P, Wudecrie 1180 ib (p), Wudecride 1228FF (p), Wodecrithe 13thAddCh 38646 (p), ib 38649 , Wodetrich 'e 1294SR (p), Wodekrith 13thAddCh 38647 , Wodecriz 13thib 38650 , Woodcrye 1573Bodl , Woodcree 1761 Rocque, 1790 Pride, Woodcray Fm 1846 Snare. As the only distinctive feature of the topography is a tiny stream, the second el. is probably rīð . This means that the -c - is part of the first el. and derivation from wudu is impossible, but Professor Löfvenberg suggests an OE  *wuduc 'small wood'. The only other suggestion which can be offered is a pers.n. *Wuduca , from the recorded Wuda .
