Etymology

The Throat, Le Throte 1498 Chertsey, The Throat Bolsingham 1786 Finchampstead, The Throat 1846 Snare. OE  þrote 'throat', which is found in several names in Sr (Sr 131, 366), and one in Db (Db 361).The precise sense, which is presumably a transferred topographical one, has not been determined. O.S. maps place the Berks name at a junction of several roads, and its use may have been similar to that of modern bottleneck .
