Etymology

'Uffa's farm', v. tūn ; -en - from the gen. of the pers.n. has been confused with -ing -. The name occurs also in L and Sa, in which examples, however, the second el. may originally have been –ingtūn .The estate was earlier known as Æscesbyrig (380), and the modern name appears to date from c. 955, v. Introd. and cf. Woolstone 383.
