Etymology

Second el. mersc 'marsh'. The first might be OE  þēod 'nation, people', found in Thetford (Nf), Tetford (L) and Ede Way (BdHu 122). The meaning could be 'common marsh'. Ekwall (DEPN) suggests a pers.n. Tydda , but more forms with -u - and with medial -e - might have been expected from such a base.
