Etymology

Sheep Bridge, Schepreg '1224–5Ass (p), Siprugge Hy 3 AD, Scheperugge c. 1240 (13th) ReadingA, Sheperuge 13thReadingC (2 ), Sheprige n.d. (14th) ReadingC (3 ), Little Sheperuge 1332 Cl, Sheprigge 1345 ib, Sheprugge Magna 1365 BM, Great Shupperugge 1422 Fine, Sheperidge 1580 AD, Sheep Bridge 1760 Rocque, Shepperidge 1766PubLib , 'sheep ridge', v. scēap , hrycg . The name was that of a manor, for the history of which v. VCH iii, 271–2. The second el. was presumably interpreted as 'bridge', and the name transferred to an actual bridge over the Loddon.
