Etymology

'Wood or clearing by a Roman road', v. strǣt , (a)h. For an account of this road v. Margary 150 ff.

The modern spelling represents the same pronunciation as -ea - in threat . The forms from 1524 and 1535 suggest that the vowel was long in the early 16th cent.
