Etymology
'Open land traversed by a Roman road', v. strǣt , feld . Stratfield Mortimer and Stratfield Saye and Turgis in Hants are on either side of the Roman road from London to Silchester (Calleva Atrebatvm). The Berks place belonged to Ralf Mortimer in 1086, and his descen- dants held it until the accession of Ed 4 (VCH iii, 423). The manorial addition has supplanted the place-name in local usage.
