Etymology

'Stony ford', a common name which occurs several times in this county. Here it refers to a crossing-place on the R. Pang. Robert Dyngley appears in this connection 1428 FA. Willelmi from William de Stanford, who held land here in 1224–5 (VCH iv, 111). Cancelar ' in 1242–3 is unexplained.
