Etymology

Gidley Fm etc, grove voc ' Gydley , Gidleyfelde 1547LRMB . There may be a connection with gyddan dene 943 (c. 1240) BCS 789, on the E. boundary of Leckhampstead about three quarters of a mile away.The charter name means 'Gydda's valley', v. denu . This OE pers.n. is only recorded in p.ns. (v. DEPN s.n. Gedding). Gidley may mean 'Gydda's wood or clearing', in which case it is identical with Gidleigh D 439, v. (a)h.
