Etymology

Tileplace Cottages, The Tilery, cf. Tywele (p), Tiwel '1214–15FF , Tigelee (p), Tygele 1214 Cur, Twyle , Tyule 1241Ass (p), and Tylehous 1451 AD. The early name means 'wood or clearing where tiles are made' v. tigel , lēah and is identical with Tiley (PN Do 200) and Tyley (Gl 2, 258), the latter on tigel leage 940 (12th) BCS 764.Professor Löfvenberg observes that such spellings as Tywele , Twyle , Tyule are due to influence from OFr  tiule , tuile 'tile'.
