Etymology
'New land', v. DEPN for other examples. In this instance, as in Gl (Gl 3, 236), the name refers to land cleared for cultivation in a medieval forest. The liberty of Newland was included in Bishop's Bear Wood (infra ), which was a chase of the Bishops of Salisbury (VCH iii, 250).
