Etymology

Arborfield Cross, Alpheldecrouch 1347 ArchJ 46, Awfeildcross 1607Norden , Aufeild Crosse 1607RentSur , Awfieldcross 1670PubLib , Arborfield Cross 1790 Pride. The second el. is crouche 'cross', replaced by cross . The first el. might be a fem. pers.n., possibly Ælfhild , but there has been confusion with the element feld , and later with the name of the nearby village of Arborfield.
