Etymology

Channy Grove, Channers Plantation, Chaderhangra 1176 P (p), Chedehengr '1220 Fees, Chadelhengre 1231 Hurley, Chadhangre 1236–7 (c. 1250) Bract, Chadehangre Hy 3, Ed I Hurley, Chaddehangre 1242–3 Fees, Cheldenhanger 1246–7FF , Chadenhang '1275–6 RH, Schadelhangre , Chalenhangere 1284Ass . Apparently identical with Chadlanger W 158–9 and Chaddlehanger D 185, though the forms for the Berks name show the confusion between l-n -r which is so common in this county. The etymology 'Ceadela's wooded slope' given in D and W is probably correct, though the coincidence of hangra occurring three times with the same unrecorded pers.n. naturally arouses suspicion. There is good evidence in other p.ns. for this pers.n., however. It appears in Chadenwick W 178–9, Chadlington O 339, Chillington D 332 and another Berks name, Chaddleworth (Pt 2).
