Historical Forms

  • Crowthorne 1607 Norden
  • Crow Thorn 1761 Rocque 1790 Pride

Etymology

The name is applied on Norden's map to a solitary tree at the junction of the Bracknell and Wokingham roads. An account of the growth of the hamlet after the arrival of Wellington College and Broadmoor Asylum is given in ArchJ 22 (85). Formerly in Sandhurst, the place was constituted a separate ecclesiastical parish in 1874, and a civil parish in 1894 (Kelly 71).
