Historical Forms

  • Caldecote 1365 Cl 1366 Pat Ed3 RentSur
  • Callecote 1424–5 ib

Etymology

Caldcot (lost), Caldecote 1365 Cl, 1366 Pat, Ed 3RentSur , Callecote 1424–5ib . Probably 'cold cottage(s)', v. c(e)ald, cot(e), but the forms are not early enough for certainty. These forms are not likely to refer to Calcutt in Cricklade (W 42–3), as suggested in VCH iv, 520.That place is some distance away, and the forms do not show the -d - of the three earliest ones for the Berks place.
