Etymology

Winterbrook, Winterbroc Hy 3 Wallingford, Wynterbrok '1284Ass , Wynterbrok 1315 Pat, 1318, 1328, 1330Queen , Wynterbroke Syche 1516–17 Rent -Sur , Winterbrooke 1550ib , Winterbrook 1738 ArchJ 20, identical in meaning with the common name Winterbourne, for which v. 277. The form from 1516–17 has sīc 'small stream' added.Two references have been noted to a 'winter ditch' (Winterdich Hy 2 Wallingford, Wynterdych Ed 2 Wallingford) in contexts which suggest that it is the stream immediately to the N. of Winterbrook, which forms the boundary between Wallingford and Cholsey, and is marked Bradford's Brook on the 1″ map.
