Etymology

Unhill Wood, Unholt , Dunholt 1241Ass (p), Donholte 1275–6 RH, in bosco de Chauseye de Hunhalt '1284Ass , Woode of Unholt , Wood called Unhold 1550RentSur , Nonholte , Bosc ' de Unholte , Bosc ' voc ' Unholde 1550LRMB ; Unwell Farm is shown 1761 Rocque. The second el. is holt 'wood'. The first is uncertain, but it seems reasonable to assume that the original form was Hun -, and it might possibly be a plant-name, such as OE  hūne 'hoarhound (marrubium vulgare )', found in Hound Ha (DEPN); cf. also Arundel Sx 136–7, which contains hār-hūne 'hoarhound'.
