Etymology

Lollingdon, Lolindone 1086 DB, Lollindon '1220 Fees, Lolledon '1241Ass , Lolindune 13thReadingC , Lollingdon '1247–8Ass , Lollindon 1271 Ipm, Lollingdon 1275–6 RH, Lollyngdon , Lollyngton 1327 Banco, Lorington Farm 1761 Rocque, 1790 Pride, Loringdon Fm 1830 OS. The name consists of dūn 'down', probably compounded with a personal name and -ing-. Stenton (40) suggests that the personal name is the well-recorded Lulla , and the -o - of the forms due to Norman influence. But since this development has not occurred in other place-names containing Lulla , such as Lullington Sx 417 which shows only a small proportion of forms with -o -, it might perhaps be safer to postulate on OE  name *Lolla .
