Etymology

OE  burhtūn, a common name which occurs most frequently as Burton. BCS 366 is spurious, but had been forged before 1170 (since it was available to the earlier author of the Abingdon Chronicle); the form from this charter is therefore the earliest reference to the place. The place-names in BCS 366 have almost certainly been copied from pre-Conquest sources.
