Etymology
The copy of BCS 873 in Abingdon is headed Carta de Bedelakinges , but the balance of evidence is greatly in favour of the interpretation of Balking as a singular name in -ing . The probability is that this is a stream-name of the same type as Wantage, Ginge, Mydeling , Lucring and Lockinge (Pt 1, 17–18, 10, 14, 16, 13), and that it is another example of the name Lockinge, with a distinguishing prefix. The reference would be to the small tributary of the Ock, which flows E. of the village. This stream is distinguished by a number of pools along its course, and Ekwall's suggestion (DEPN) that the prefix is the gen.pl. of bæð is very satisfactory. bæð usually has more specialised meanings in p.ns., but the meaning 'pool' is suggested by the f.n. Suthenedebath Nt 275.
