Etymology

Ashdown Park, Ayshen Parke , Boscus vocatus Ayshen -Parke 1519 Ashmole, Ashdown Park 1736RecOffCat , 1761 Rocque. The only early forms for the name are to be found in BCS 431 and 828, where the Glastonbury estate at Ashbury is referred to as Asshedoune , Aysshedun (spellings taken from GlastonCh). W. H. Stevenson (Asser p. 235) took this name to be a survival of OE  Æscesdūn (v. Pt 12–4).This is possible, but cannot be regarded as certain.
