Etymology

Shippon, Sipene 1086 DB, Scipena c. 1200ClaudiusCix , Schippen '1241Ass , Schipene , Shypene 1284ib , Schepen '1294SR , Shupene 1311–12FF (p), 1316 FA, Shepen 1318 Cl (p), Schupene 1327SR , a. 1377 ObAcc, 'cattle-shed', from OE  scypen. Cf. Schupenehull '1284Ass (p), 'Shippon Hill'; another, erratic, form for this place may be Scerpenhylla Hy 1 (c. 1200) ClaudiusCix , f. 187d. The context makes it improbable that Scerpenhylla has any connection with Leland's Serpenhill (infra 442).
