Eglemont

Early-attested site in the Parish of Totternhoe

Historical Forms

  • Eglemunt 1166 P 1171–7 Dunst 13th
  • Eglemont 1318 Cl

Etymology

The site of this quarry was in the fields north of Totternhoe (VCH iii. 448), and it was used to provide the stone for the king's house at Windsor (cf. Pipe Roll for 1166). The meaning is clearly 'eagle's hill,' a picturesque name given by the Normans to Totternhoe Hill.
