Etymology

The second element is the somewhat rare OE  camp, 'open country,' which nearly always appears now as combe on our maps. Professor Ekwall suggests the possibility of an OE  pers. name Hān (cf. hān , 'hone') from which we seem to have a derivative patronymic form in Honing (Nf). Cf. also Hannington (Nth) with shortening of ā in the trisyllable.
