Etymology

'Pearta's nook of land' v. healh . For this pers. name, not found independently in OE , Skeat quotes the parallel of Peartanhal (Wo) from BCS 1282 and Peartingawyrþ from BCS 262, which, it may be added, is almost certainly Petworth (Sx).Further examples of the name are to be found in Partney (L), Bede Peartaneu , and Partington (Ch), KCD 749 Partingtun .
