Fernels Wood

Early-attested site in the Parish of Hyde

Historical Forms

  • Fenelsgrove or Fennel Grove al. Fenels Luton 1504 Ipm

Etymology

The form on the modern O.S. map seems to be an error. This goes back to the FitzNeel family who, as early as 1283, held land in Luton (VCH ii. 358), and this wood formed part of their manor of Fennels Grove.
