Etymology

'Hætta's clearing' v. leah . The OE form seems to make the existence of this pers. name certain, but it is not otherwise on record. Presumably it is a pet-form for one of the com- pound names in Hǣð -. The Port family were connected with Hatley as early as 1197. It passed to the Cockayne family in 1417 (cf. VCH ii. 215). 'Bury' is used in its manorial sense (v. burh ) but is prefixed rather than, as usual, suffixed. For Cocking , cf. Wilden supra 66.
