Etymology

The existence of an OE  pers. name Badel (a ), a diminutive of the recorded name Bada , is made certain by the p.n. Badelanbroc (KCD 715) and by Badlingham (C). The present name, therefore, means 'Badel's hill,' v. dun . The strong form Badel occurs again in Badlesmere (K). Sound dissimilation has done its best with this name, leading sometimes to a suffix -ton and later to a prefix Batel -.
