Etymology

, 1836OS , Album Monasterium by Albertbyri c.1540 Leland, Blacke Abbey 1574-5 PR(H) 6, Black Abbeye als. White Abbey 1633 ib, The Abey 1656-7 ib, White Abby 1683 ib, Black Abby 1686 ib, Ye Abby 1688ib . Alberbury Priory was a house of Grandmontine Monks founded by Fulk Fitz Warin III . The monks wore black habits . The account in VCH II, pp.47-50 , says that the house was called New Abbey or Black Abbey in the Middle Ages , but was known as White Abbey , from the building stone , since Leland 's time . References in parish registers indicate , however , that Black Abbey and White Abbey alternated throughout the 17th .
