Etymology

The present name means 'farm on the river Worf ,' the old name for the Ray, v. tun and supra 9. The older alternative lost name is probably 'elder-tree down,' v. ellen , with early folk-etymologising in Florence of Worcester and elsewhere as if the name derived from a pers. name. Cf. to þæm ællen stybbe in the bounds of Ellendun (BCS 948).
