Etymology

'Grazing or pasture farm', v. gærsing (ME  gresing ), tūn . There is considerable variation in the later spellings, due partly to the falling together of gers - and girs - which occurs in other YW p.ns. (cf. Phonol. § 16) and partly to the metathesis of gers - (and its normal development gars -) and of girs - to gres -, gras - and gris - respectively.
