Etymology

'Farmstead near the alders', v. alor (gen.pl. alra ), tūn , distinguished from other Allertons in YW as Bywater from its situation on the R. Aire (v. , wæter ). The spelling Aure - has AN vocalisation (IPN 113) and Alver - is an analogical substitution from Allerton Mauleverer v, 12infra .
