Etymology

The Borough of Leeds was formerly made up of the original borough together with the old townships of Potter Newton, Chapel Allerton and Headingley (6″ O.S. 1905–6), and this is followed in the arrangement of the material. The older borough lay north of the R. Aire, but the parish extended across the river to include the townships of Armley (including Bramley, Farnley and Wortley), Holbeck and Hunslet in Morley Wapentake (v. iii, 210supra ). The modern County Borough of Leeds includes all the foregoing town- ships and has taken in on the south of the river the township of Middleton (from Rothwell parish in Agbrigg Wapentake ii, 139supra ), and north of the river the townships of Shadwell (Thorner parish 102supra ), Roundhay (Barwick parish 113supra ), Temple Newsam, Osmondthorpe, Seacroft and Thorpe Stapleton (from Whitkirk parish, 115supra ), Alwoodley (from Harewood parish 179infra ) and Adel (189infra ).
