Etymology
'hāmby the maple tree,' first element OE mapuldor . There were originally two manors, of which Mapledurham Chazey was the smaller. The owner of Mapledurham Gurney bought Mapledurham Chazey in 1582. The former manor belonged to William de Warene in 1086, and the latter to Miles Crispin. Edith de Warene married Gerard de Gournai c. 1080. Juliana de Gournai married William Bardolf the younger, and he inherited the manor in 1254. Walter de Chauseia grants land at Mapledurham c. 1180 Cooke: the family derives its name from Cholsey Berks.
