Etymology

Ekwall (DEPN) takes this name to be a reduced form of OE  Sǣwulfestūn , 'Sæwulf 's farm,' but when the form Selveston (cf. note infra ) is removed from the early forms there is no philological support for such an interpretation. It is perhaps best not to attempt any explanation in view of the divergent and inconsistent early forms.
