Etymology

'The people of Gēdel or Gēdla ,' v. ingas , PN in -ing 90 and DEPN. Though not on record, this would be a regular name formation corresponding to OGer  Gōdila (Förstemann PN 660).Ekwall (DEPN) suggests that the same name may be found in Gilston (Herts). For an alternative possibility cf. PN Herts 192.
