Etymology

This is a difficult name, but comparison with the forms of Loughton (PN Bk 20) suggests that we have the personal name Luha , recorded from the 10th cent. The forms of Loughton show that an original Luhingtun might, already in the 12th cent., appear as Lufton . The spellings with Luffe - are probably due to the influence of the names like Luffenham (R) containing the personal name Luffa . Hence 'Luh (h )a 's wic or farm.'
