Etymology
OE mæðl-æsc 'ash-tree where speeches are held', i.e. at the meeting of an assembly or a council. The OE change from ðl to dl , tl is evidenced in a group of words (v. Bülbring § 444, Campbell § 419). In most of the early forms the second element seems to have been replaced by OScand askr. This may have been the meeting-place of the assembly that, at some stage, was the hundred-court (cf. Ekwall in DEPN and Amgart in EHN III 160).
