Etymology

( local ) ( v. spinney ) , cf. Crocks way 1601Terrier , Croxe way 1653ib ( v. weg ; the road east to Cranoe ) , Croxie 1625ib , Croxil 1638, c.1650ib (v. hyll), Crox 1708, 1745ib , upon Crox 1708 (18) ib . Two possible explanations present themselves for these names : ( i ) either their base is crocc ' a crock, an earthenware pot ' , with reference to former pottery kilns which may have been sited at Croxfield , an ideal hill - top location for them to the east of the township , still served directly by roads from Tur Langton and Church Langton , or ( ii ) the base is the ON  masc. pers.n.Krókr . However , Scand pers. ns . compounded with OE  weg are very rare . Only Ravenildesweye ( with the ON  fem. pers.n. Hrafnhildr , v. Db 754 ) and the disputed Thoresway ( with the ON  masc. pers.n. þórir , v. L 3150 ) have otherwise been identified .
