Etymology

The OE form shows that this name, as Ekwall has suggested, may be from an unrecorded OE  rodde (gen.sg. roddan ) corresponding to Norw  rodda 'an upright pole', or from an OE  pers.n. Rodda (derived from OE  rodd 'rod, stick'); v. beorg 'hill', here denoting Rodborough Hill.
