Etymology

Named from the R. Leadon (i, 10supra ). It is distinguished from Upleadon (189infra ) by the affix OE  hīwan, gen.pl. hīgna , 'household, members of a household or religious community', in this case the monks of St Peter's Gloucester, to whom the estate was granted in 1239 (Glouc). Cf. also Highnam (159infra ).
