Etymology

The later hundred court met at Dodington Ash 48infra (Fosbrooke ii, 1), but since Dodington was originally in Edderstone hundred (DB), Dodington Ash is not likely to be identical with the place from which Grumbald's Ash hundred was named; that site has not been located; in 1349 an inquisition was taken at Grymbaldesaysch (Ipm). There is a f.n. Grumbles Ash in Horsley (i, 94supra ), but that is some miles outside the known limits of the hundred, and is a transferred name, as is Hagg mead (also in Horsley) from Hagmead Hundred (v. foll.). The name meant 'Grimbald's meeting-place' (v. stōw ), and from the 12th century 'Grimbald's ash-tree' (v. æsc ).The pers.n., found already in OE (Forssner 130), is from OG  Grimbald . Hundred path (iii, 34) in Hawkesbury is at grid 156–793843.
