Etymology

'Cynelāf 's valley,' v. denu . The first form shows an inverted spelling with OE y for e . Were it not for the fact that the first form is derived from a 10th-century original it would be more satisfactory to suggest a feminine personal name Cyneleofu which would fit all the later forms in -leue - and obviate the difficulty of the absence of genitival -es . Cyneleofu as a feminine name would have gen. Cyneleofe . For the difficulties of identification see Kelvedon Hatch supra 58–9.
